In the world of internet marketing, acronyms are all over the place. If you don’t know what it means you better learn quick! When I deal with clients many are confused with the different types of online marketing tools and usually end up paying for something they may not need. One of the most frequently used acronym is SEO, Search Engine Optimization. Which is usually and easily mixed up with SEM, Search Engine Marketing. So I’ll try to quickly simply the two terms!

SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is basically working your website to increase its awareness and “searchability” through organic searches via Google, Yahoo!, etc., basically search engines. Techniques can include basic steps such as placing better more focused keywords in the “meta-data” of your website or as advanced as link building, cross linking, and more. SEO usually does not involve paid advertising. SEO can be free and can be quite expensive depending on how much you plan on investing in it; however, the results are much more powerful. SEO can take a bit longer to see results due to the process involved, but an organic search result can lead to more exposure and branding power.

SEM, Search Engine Marketing, on the other hand does involve paid resources. This includes paid advertisements, paid search results, etc. This more has to do with marketing your website rather then the optimization concept. Services such as Google AdWords allow companies to purchase specific keywords for websites to appear when searched. SEM can become extremely pricey and requires frequent monitoring. The upside the quicker exposure time that can result in quicker ROI (Another acronym?!? Relax, ROI – Return On Investment).

So I hope I have cleared up a little bit of confusion. Remember that SEO and SEM are both powerful tools for internet marketing. One may work better for you than the other, see which fits better into your internet marketing plan.

A New Style of Meetings?

Now this concept isn’t anything new… but what if there was a meeting going on 24/7 in your workplace? No more “Hey guys lets get together in about 15 minutes and discuss A B C D.” Instead a weekly update from the uppers that would let everyone know what is going on, and allowing questions and discussions to happen only when needed? I just watched a TedTalk by Jason Fried, take a look and we’ll continue:

Now, I don’t agree with him a 100%; however, he does bring out some good points about productivity. The biggest thing that I really enjoyed was his statement that if you have ten people in a meeting for one hour that’s 10 hours worth of work lost. But what if…. what if a meeting is held on an online or in a central digitized or maybe even a analog medium where meetings can be held much like, if not exactly, like an online forum. Where a manager can post up a meeting topic or monthly company updates and then just allow the employees to continue their work and as topics arise they pitch in. It provides a comfortable and flexible medium for company’s to maintain productivity and keep everyone updated. Another thing it allows is for employees not to be put on the spot to think of things in the meetings, it provides a safety net for people to convey their ideas in a non threatening or impulse kind of way.

WOW! I am SO sorry for not posting up in a while. I have gotten extermely busy at work. With a new website in the works, an infomercial on its way to launch, AND starting up a new website, I have been quite the stressed out yes man. Anyway I was checking up on the news this morning and ran into this interesting story on Yahoo! Sports about the Red Bull NASCAR “pit mistake”. What I think people don’t realize that may have been considered a mistake and curse during the race is a blessing to Red Bull.

Here’s the video:

Did you notice it? Did you notice the airtime Red Bull basically got? For something that stood out.. a mistake that may have turned into quite a profitable turnout. Think about it! Post a response!

Old Spice did well. I just read on Mashable.com an article that through Old Spice’s YouTube campaign with the ever hilarious “Old Spice guy” has now doubled their sales. Can it be all based on this campaign? Possibly. But it sure did help. Seth Godin wrote a book about the “Purple Cow” concept, a product, idea, that just completely stands out. His example used is when you are driving down the road and you see a bunch of cows, we get used to it. Then all of sudden you see this “purple” cow and you stop, look, and become totally amazed that there is a purple cow. That is what Old Spice did with these ridiculously funny commercials. We’ve seen other commercials for mens’ hygiene products but its all the same. Guy in the shower rubbing his face wondering why it feels like crap and then BAM! Razor this, lotion that, women love this, women love that etc. We get used it, we see the product say, “oh that’s interesting”, more blades, more smooth, and then SHAZAM! OLD SPICE GUY! Look here I am on a horse, now I’m not, yes I am, I am your man, this is the man you want your man to be..etc.etc.etc. It stands out, its funny, its memorable. It’s Old Spice’s purple cow.

Now lets think about this. That commercial, was it aimed towards men? It’s a male hygiene product line, the company’s line or product is aimed at a target market for men; however, that commercial is actually aimed for women. Don’t you think so? Yes, it can be aimed for men why? Because that is what men want to be like, they want to be the Old Spice guy to women. But what happened? The commercials are aimed for women. I mean it straight up says it in their commercials, “Ladies, I am the man you want your man to be”. So what happens? A female watching TV see’s this commercial, looks over at her man, thinks to self “I want my man to be an Old Spice Man”, so then she goes to the local store and picks up Old Spice and gives it to her man saying “BABY! YOU CAN BE MY OLD SPICE MAN!” and then he musters up and makes her happy. (Yes, this is most likely an exaggeration of the potential situation; however, this can totally be happening and is what Old Spice truly aimed for!)

Interesting? Comment!

The iPhone has been a huge mover in the telecommunications industry. With the ability to find an “app” for almost ANYTHING and EVERYTHING it has changed the way we spend our down time, our time on the go, etc. But all isn’t perfect in the iPhone world. In case you haven’t heard, the new iPhone’s antenna system is integrated into the outside metal edge of the phone. So what is the issue? Well place your hands on it when you receive or send a call. What happens? Your call is dropped. Why? Well your hands touching both sides of the phone grounds the antenna meaning you lose reception. Bad design? Probably. Wait a minute. Are you sure? OR did Apple just create opportunity for the handset accessories market? How are you going to prevent your iPhone 4 from dropping the call? Get a case! Think about it and post up a response! I would love to hear what you think!
